If you could choose, which would you want for your cows?
During a particularly difficult week, at least 30% of the cows were heavy breathing for approximately:
- 18 hours in Group 2
- 9.5 hours in Group 3
- Less than 1 hour in Group 5
The answer seems obvious. The important question is how the difference happened.
All three groups were from the same dairy farm, exposed to the same weather, and all groups have active heat-stress management program. The difference was how they were cooled during the day.
Group 5 received continuous Core Cool cooling in the home pen, where the cows naturally eat and rest. They made zero additional trips to the Cool Yard.
This was not a comparison between cooled cows and non-cooled cows. All three groups received cooling.
It was a comparison of how cows responded to different cooling strategies.
And that is the result farmers need to see:
Under the same difficult heat load, Group 5 spent dramatically less time in severe heavy breathing.
The Comparison
All three groups received cooling before milking in the holding area. The difference was what happened during the rest of the day:
- Group 2 had sensor-activated bunk line soakers and was taken to a dedicated Cool Yard three additional times per day, for 45 minutes per session.
- Group 3 had angled HVLS fans with a low-pressure misting system using cold water from the chiller and was also taken to the Cool Yard three additional times per day, for 45 minutes per session.
- Group 5 received continuous Core Cool cooling in its home pen, where the cows naturally eat and rest, with zero additional trips to the Cool Yard.
Same diary. Same weather. Different cooling strategies.
The Heat the Cows Faced
August 18 through 24 gave us a particularly useful week to examine.
August 21 and 22 were the most challenging days, with peak THI reaching approximately 82.5 to 82.6 and 11 to 12 hours at THI 80 or higher.
But the daytime peaks only tell part of the story. There were no recovery hours below THI 68 during the entire week. The cows weren't getting much overnight relief before starting another hot day. The heat kept coming.

Temperature alone doesn't tell us enough about what the cow is experiencing. We also need to consider humidity, THI (Temperature Humidity Index), how long those conditions persist, and whether the cow gets enough relief overnight to get rid of some of the heat she has accumulated.
Even then, we are still only measuring the environment.
To find out whether the cooling is actually working, we need to ask the cow.
What the Cows Showed
A high-producing cow generates a tremendous amount of heat internally. As environmental conditions make it harder for her to get rid of that heat, respiration increases as part of her effort to cool herself. Eventually, that response can progress to heavy breathing.
We have been monitoring Heavy Breathing, or HB, using 5-minute SCR data. Rather than relying only on a daily average, we can see when an increasing percentage of each group begins heavy breathing and how long that response lasts.
For this comparison, we looked at the 30% HB threshold. Put simply:
How much time did each group spend with at least 30% of its cows heavy-breathing?
From August 18 through 24:
- Group 2: 1,100 minutes — about 18 hours
- Group 3: 565 minutes — about 9.5 hours
- Group 5: 50 minutes — less than one hour

Group 2 reached roughly 18 hours. Group 3 reached about 9.5 hours. Group 5 reached less than one hour.
But the weekly totals don't tell us when those minutes happened. For that, we need to look at the 5-minute data.

You don't need to be a data scientist to see the difference.
Groups 2 and 3 show repeated periods where a much larger percentage of the group is heavy-breathing. Group 5 still responds to the heat, but its HB generally stays lower and doesn't repeatedly climb to the same levels.
Now let's look specifically at August 21 and 22.
These were the two hardest weather days of the week. Peak THI reached 82.5 and 82.6, with 11 and 12 hours at THI 80 or higher.
At the 30% HB threshold:
- Group 2: 260 minutes on August 21 and 230 minutes on August 22
- Group 3: 150 minutes on August 21 and 85 minutes on August 22
- Group 5: zero minutes on both days
Those two days got my attention.
As the heat load became more difficult and lasted longer, Group 5 did not progress into the same level of group heavy breathing we see in Groups 2 and 3.
The Result Held Across Two Weeks
Was this simply one unusually good week for Group 5?
We went back and looked at the previous week, Aug 11 to 17. At the 30% or greater HB threshold, the weekly totals were approximately:
- Group 2: 1,230 minutes
- Group 3: 765 minutes
- Group 5: 20 minutes
Two consecutive hot weeks produced the same order: Group 5 lowest, Group 3 in the middle, and Group 2 highest.
That doesn't mean every week will look exactly the same. This is an ongoing commercial-farm trial, not a controlled research facility. But seeing the same pattern across consecutive weeks gives us more confidence that we aren't simply looking at one unusually good week.
The Cows Still Felt the Heat
This is important.
So far, we have been talking about the point where at least 30% of the group is heavy breathing. But what happens if we lower that threshold to 20% HB and capture a milder response?
During August 18 through 24:
- Group 2: 2,030 minutes
- Group 3: 955 minutes
- Group 5: 565 minutes
So we certainly aren't suggesting Core Cool somehow made these cows immune to a Middle Eastern summer. Group 5 was responding to the heat too.
But this is where the data gets particularly interesting.
Group 5 accumulated 565 minutes at the 20% threshold, but only 50 minutes at the 30% threshold.
For Group 3, those numbers were 955 and 565 minutes.
For Group 2, they were 2,030 and 1,100 minutes.
The important story isn't that Group 5 never responded to the heat. It did.
The difference is how often that response progressed into a more severe group-level heavy-breathing event.
What This Means on a Dairy
The practical question is not whether cooling equipment is running. It is whether the cows are handling the heat better.
In this trial, continuous cooling in the home pen was associated with fewer severe heavy-breathing events, without three additional trips to the Cool Yard each day.
Cooling yards work. We aren't arguing otherwise.
The question we are investigating is different:
Can we reduce heat accumulation by continuously cooling the cow where she naturally spends her time, rather than relying on additional cooling events throughout the day?
During these two weeks, the cow-response data gives us a strong reason to keep asking that question.
Why Core Cool Systems?
Fan size matters. CFM matters. Airspeed matters. Water volume matters.
Those numbers tell us a lot about the cooling system. But they don't necessarily tell us whether the cow is cool.
That's why I keep coming back to the same question:
Show me what it did to the cow.
